New Delhi, May 20, 2025 – India has reported 257 active COVID-19 cases as of May 19, with the majority concentrated in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, according to health officials. Despite a recent uptick in cases, authorities have assured the public that the situation remains under control, with most infections being mild and manageable at home.
In the week leading up to May 19, Kerala recorded 69 new cases, Maharashtra 44, and Tamil Nadu 34, making these states the primary contributors to the current active caseload. Other states, including Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim, have also reported fresh cases, though in significantly lower numbers.
Health officials noted that the rise aligns with a global increase in COVID-19 cases, potentially driven by new Omicron subvariants like Eris and XEC circulating in some regions. However, no specific variant has been identified as dominant in India’s current cases. Most patients are experiencing mild symptoms, and hospitalizations remain low.
Maharashtra reported two deaths in the same period, but medical professionals clarified that these were not directly attributed to COVID-19. Both individuals—a 59-year-old cancer patient and a 14-year-old with kidney disease—tested positive incidentally and succumbed to their pre-existing conditions.
The Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, urging heightened testing and vigilance, particularly for senior citizens and those with comorbidities. “There’s no cause for alarm,” a senior official stated. “We’re ensuring robust surveillance and encouraging basic precautions like masking in crowded areas for vulnerable groups.”
As India navigates this minor resurgence, public health measures remain focused on early detection and targeted interventions to keep the virus in check. Citizens are advised to stay informed and follow local health guidelines.
