Romancing Father’s Age? Trisha Krishnan Responds to Thug Life Backlash

As the release of Thug Life draws closer, the spotlight is now on the unexpected on-screen pairing of Kamal Haasan and Trisha Krishnan. While fans are eagerly awaiting the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after Nayakan, the internet is buzzing for another reason — the 30-year age gap between the film’s lead pair.

Many social media users have criticized the romantic angle between Kamal Haasan and Trisha, calling the pairing uncomfortable and even referring to Kamal as being of “father’s age.” The backlash intensified following the release of the song Sugar Baby, which features Trisha in a glamorous avatar. Some netizens found it inappropriate for an actress in her 40s to perform in an item-style song, especially in a Mani Ratnam film, known for its classy storytelling.

Trisha, however, has taken the criticism in stride. At a recent pre-release event in Mumbai, she addressed the comments directly. “I think that’s something I knew when they announced the film and I had not even signed it. So that’s when I knew — wow, this is magic. And I was not even part of the film at that point in time,” she shared.

She also expressed how surreal it felt to be working under the direction of Mani Ratnam and alongside a legend like Kamal Haasan. “So all of us as actors, we were like, oh damn, we have to do some work here. We’ve got to stop staring at them. So it was magic,” Trisha added.

Despite the trolling, the actress believes that the on-screen chemistry will win hearts. Her confidence in the film’s vision and the collaboration between Kamal and Mani Ratnam speaks volumes about her commitment to the role.

Thug Life is set to release on June 5, 2025, and continues to spark conversations — both for its cinematic legacy and its bold casting choices. Whether this pairing turns out to be magical or mismatched is something only the big screen can reveal.
